Judith Elliot McDonald was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she studied art and theater. She was transplanted to Oregon many years ago and considers herself an Oregon writer with a ‘back east’ sensibility. Earlier in her career she wrote newspaper and periodical feature articles primarily on travel, the arts and food/restaurant criticism. She continued to work in theater and has been a theater director, teacher, actor, coach and designer. She wrote her first play in 1996. Her award-winning one-act, In Juliet’s Garden, was published by Samuel French Inc. in 2007. Another of her popular one-acts, Macbeth on Cable News, is an entertaining companion piece to In Juliet's Garden. She was commissioned to produce a two-act contemporary feminist work entitled The Bottom of the Box which was performed regionally.
She is completing a stage adaptation of Jane Kirkpatrick's historical regional best seller A Gathering of Finches. The play is entitled Cassie Simpson of Shore Acres and tells the story of the woman who was the inspiration for Shore Acres, an Oregon State Park. The play is due to be completed in January of 2021
McDonald’s recent literary fiction, Feargus, was published by Eco-Justice Press of Eugene, Oregon in May of 2019. Feargus tells the story of a heroic dog, a woman with a frightful history with dogs, and a pack of five feral dogs. Please see 'Upcoming' for additional information.
She is at work on her next novel, Shackamaxon, a historical fiction which takes place over five hundred years along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania.
